The Mioritic Shepherd Dog was selected out of a natural breed from Carpathians, the main reason being its utility. It is an excellent dog for flocks, a faithful watch dog and an amazing house dog. Because in the last decades this breed became really popular, the number of dogs has increased. However, with the increase in population the number of disorders that the dogs suffer from has also increased.

It is known that this breed has a big predisposition for diseases like ear infections. The purpose of this study was the analysis of the auricular microbial flora for The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog in order to prevent the auricular conditions. The experiment was done on 21 healthy dogs from this breed; they had their bacterial and mycotic auricular flora checked. Ear secretions were collected and analyzed. These samples were grown in enriched media (sheep blood agar) for bacteria and media for fungi (Sabouraud environment with dextrose), incubated at 370C for 24 hours for the bacteria and 280C for the fungi, for 5 days. Subsequently, the colonies were identified through morphological characteristics and biochimical tests. As a result, it was found that the majority of the test samples were identified as being bacteria from Staphylococcus type. There were also discovered bacteria from Micrococcus, Neisseria, Corynebacterium, Bacillus and Pseudomonas. The tests for identifying the mycosis showed that the majority of the secretions had yeasts from Malassezia, as well as yeasts from Candida and Cryptococcus.
The study shows the bacterial and yeast load from the ears of the healthy dogs. The micro-organisms that were identified belong to species that include major pathogens and not only.
We postulate that an important cause for the development of ear infections in Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog could be factors that cause a general or local immunosuppression.
